Samuel Asati wins award after starring for Indian side on debut

Kenya Sevens and KCB Rugby scrum-half Samuel Asati announced his arrival on the big stage in style after producing a standout performance during the opening day of the Rugby Premier League (RPL) on Tuesday, 16 June at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, India.

The talented playmaker was among the top performers of the day after inspiring Delhi Redz to a commanding 31-21 victory over Chennai Bulls.

Asati's electric display earned him 12 performance points, courtesy of two tries, four tackles, a conversion, and a try assist in a memorable debut.

The Kenya international looked right at home in the fast-paced competition, dictating play from scrum-half and proving a constant threat whenever he had the ball in hand.

His two tries played a crucial role in helping Delhi Redz secure maximum points and move to the summit of the league standings after the opening round of matches.

Asati was not the only Kenyan to leave his mark on the encounter. Fellow Kenya Sevens star John Okoth also crossed the whitewash, while Patrick Odongo captained the side.

Nygel Amaitsa further underlined the strong Kenyan presence in the squad after making an impact off the bench as Delhi Redz launched their title bid impressively.

The opening round also saw other Kenya internationals feature prominently across the competition.

Kevin Wekesa turned out for Hyderabad Heroes in their closely contested clash against Bengaluru Bravehearts. Despite a spirited display, Hyderabad Heroes fell 28-21 to the Bravehearts in one of the day's most competitive fixtures.

Meanwhile, Kenya Lionesses captain Grace Okulu got her Rugby Premier League campaign off to a bright personal start after scoring a try for Mumbai Dreamers. However, her efforts were not enough to prevent Mumbai from suffering a 31-19 defeat to Kolkata Banga Tigers in their opening match.

Following the first round of fixtures, Delhi Redz sit at the top of the standings with four points, level with Bengaluru Bravehearts, who occupy second place.

Mumbai Dreamers are third with three points, while Hyderabad Heroes are fourth and still searching for their first points of the season.
