After beating Spain in the plate semis, Shujaa advance to the fifth place playoffs where they take on Uganda at 1542EAT

Kenya men’s national rugby team, Shujaa advanced to the fifth place playoff after overcoming Spain 27-10 in the plate semi-finals in the second tournament of the Emirates Invitational Sevens in Dubai.

Shujaa clashed with Spain in the plate semifinals of the second tournament after disappointingly dropping out of the main cup in the quarter finals at the hands of Chile in their first match of day two.

Kenya were looking for redemption when they locked horns against Spain -who they defeated 17-14 in day one. And in a statement of intent, Innocent Simiyu’s men came out of the blocks the quickest, Jacob Ojee scoring the opening try of the game after a grabber kick by Daniel Taabu. Johnstone Olindi added the second after touching down under the posts to give Kenya a 10-0 lead. Alvin Otieno then added the third try for Kenya after dispatching his challengers with his idiosyncratic handoff for a 15-0 score. Moments before the half time interval, Spain got a try of their own to take the scores to 15-5 at the break.

Jeff Oluoch added a fourth try in the second half before Spain touched down for their second try of the game to half the scores, making it 20-10. Derrick Keyoga added the fifth and last try of the game which saw the first successful conversion of the game, bringing the game to an end at 27-10 as Kenya completed the double over Spain.

With the win, Shujaa advance to the fifth place playoff where they will face neighbours Uganda who they defeated yesterday 28-10. The game will take place at 1542 EAT.

The Kenya Lionesses on the other hand take on USA at 1436 EAT.
