Kenya qualified for the Sevens Rugby World Cup by winning the third place playoffs

Following insipid performances in the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s Cup last weekend, the men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa head coach Innocent Simiyu has revealed that they faced logistical challenges in the tournament.

Shujaa scrapped through the tournament that doubled up as 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup qualifiers as they beat Zimbabwe 19-12 in the third-place playoffs to punch a ticket to the intercontinental tourney.

Kenya posted jaw-dropping results after losing to Madagascar in their final Pool clash and followed that up with a 22-12 loss to hosts Uganda in the semis which left them needing nothing short of a win to qualify for the World Cup against Zimbabwe.

Simiyu was delighted to have sealed a place in the World Cup that kicks off on Friday, 9 September and runs through to Sunday, 11 September but lamented the logistical challenges.

“First of all, we are quite happy to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, the boys gave their best and put everything on the line to qualify despite the many challenges we have gone through in the past two weeks. Looking at the tournament and logistical challenges we were quite happy with how they performed, they rose above and beyond,” Simiyu.

Shujaa had little time to prepare for the tournament after coming off another disappointing leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series in Vancouver where they again failed to get to the Main Cup quarters following losses to Fiji and England.

Kenya will hope to up the ante as they shift their focus on Toulouse and London Sevens that come later in May.
