The uncertainty surrounding the KRU elections poses a challenge for what awaits the sport in the country.
The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) elections were set to take place today March 24, but they were suspended following an order from the High Court.
The elections which were held in September 2022 were declared null and void by the Sports Disputes Tribunal. Now, the second postponement comes as a result of a court order.
The Union will be commended for complying with the SDT to redo the elections after 60 days and complying with all the electoral guidelines. Thumbs up for also obeying the court order of suspending the elections.
“Motion dated 22.03.2023 considered. The motion is certified urgent for hearing on 9.05.2023. Meanwhile, so that the objects thereof are not defeated, the court hereby issues a temporary order staying/suspending the 1st respondent’s notice dated 20.02.2023 IRO the AGM scheduled for 24.03.2023. The temporary order will last until 9.05.2023,” the court order read following an appeal by aspiring secretary Raymond Olendo.
However, the state of these sporadic elections has had fans concerned. Many are wondering if it could be due to genuine or selfish, personal motives.
Regardless of the reason, the delay in holding elections is likely to affect a busy year of rugby. Kenya Simbas are expected to begin their Currie Cup campaign in less than a week.

The new coach is in place, and the squad is there, but players are still waiting for official communication. The Simbas are set to begin their Currie Cup campaign against Boland Cavaliers in Cape Town on Saturday 1 April.
“It has been a week. We met on Saturday, submitted passports and Yellow Fever certificates, and that was it,” the player who sought anonymity revealed.
Shujaa are also expected to travel to Hong Kong and Singapore for the World Rugby 7s Series. With the completion of the 15s season, the 7s circuit is already calling.
Such tournaments and activities require long-term planning and preparation, which will be disrupted by the postponement.
The uncertainty surrounding the KRU elections will also lead to a loss of confidence in the union, as well as frustrate fans and sponsors.
This loss of confidence is likely to impact the development of rugby in Kenya, with already fewer resources and opportunities for players.
