Mwamba RFC captain Ronnie Omondi has backed their female counterparts Mwamba RFC ladies to shine in the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Women’s Kenya Cup finals slated for Saturday, 6 April at the RFUEA Grounds.
The match was initially set to curtain raise the men’s Kenya Cup final at the ASK Kakamega Showground but was retained in Nairobi due to unavoidable circumstances.
Defending champions Mwamba ladies will lock horns with first-time finalists Northern Suburbs in a clash that has all the ingredients of a mouth-watering fixture.
Speaking to the club’s media ahead of the match, Omondi thanked the fans for their unwavering support of the team, calling on them to turn up in large numbers to help propel the team to glory.
“I want to thank all the fans for your support throughout this season. As we gear up for the Kenya Cup women's finals, I urge you to all come out in large numbers and rally behind our ladies. Let us show our support and cheer them on to victory. Together, let us make our presence felt and bring this victory home,” Omondi said.
To proceed to the final stage, Mwamba ladies heaped an 81-0 misery on Shamberere in the match played at the RFUEA Grounds on Friday 29 March while Northern Suburbs saw off Rongo University 29-9 in the match held at the Equip College, Kitale on Saturday, 29 March.
Mwamba has been the dominant team over the past two seasons of the Women’s Kenya Cup. They are on the hunt for a third Kenya Cup title, having clinched the trophy in the inaugural edition in 2022 and defended their title in 2023.
The team boasts of a strong technical bench that includes Joyce Odhiambo alias JJ, Sharon Wanjala, John Oduk, Jeff Onyango, and Joseph Baabu.
Stacy Atieno starts at hooker position and will be supported by Jane Chanya and Natasha Emali at the front row. Stephanie Waithera and Celestine Ajiambo have been tasked with the engine room.
The back row has Linet Moraa, Naomi Jelagat, and Kenya Lionesses’ vintage player Naomi Amuguni. Edith Naliaka and Margret Wangui start at scrum half and flyhalf respectively.
Diana Omosso starts at fullback and is covered by speedsters Brenda Ogembo and Terry Ayesa on both wings. Faith Livoi and Laureen Akoth start at the center position. Millicent Liatuma, Yvonne Khatundu, Purity Ombui, and Mercy Obiero among others, start from the bench.
However, standing in their path to glory are the challengers from Northern Suburbs. Despite this being their inaugural appearance in the final, the Suburbs have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the season.
