Beatrice Chebet sprinted to victory in the women’s 5000m in Brussels, securing the Diamond League Trophy with a meet record time of 14:09.82.
Ethiopian runners Eisa Medina and Tesfay Fotyen finished second and third, clocking 14:21.89 and 14:28.53, respectively.
Fresh off her strong performances in the 10,000m and 5000m at the Olympics, Chebet delivered a thrilling finish to solidify her status in the event.
The 2022 World Championship bronze medalist took the lead after the pacemakers stepped off and maintained her position alongside Medina for most of the race before surging ahead on the final bend.
As Medina and Tesfay closed in, Chebet remained calm and accelerated toward the finish, clinching the win in commanding fashion.
Chebet’s race strategy was clear from the outset, as she immediately took command with two pacemakers guiding her through the early stages. Once they stepped aside, she maintained her dominance, showing once again why she’s a powerhouse in distance running.
Her victory in Brussels is yet another highlight of her remarkable 2024 season. Earlier this year, Chebet broke the world record in the 10,000 meters with an astonishing time of 28:54.14 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.
She also set a blistering 14:13 world record in the 5-kilometer road race in Barcelona, a mark that still stands.
In addition to her record-breaking feats, Chebet claimed double gold in both the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the Paris Olympic Games, solidifying her status as one of the greatest distance runners of her era.
The only record still eluding her is the 5000-meter world record, held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at 14:00.21.
Meanwhile, fellow Kenyan Caroline Nyaga delivered a strong performance, finishing fifth with a personal best of 14:30.14.
