Gor Mahia make major captaincy decision ahead of new season

Harambee Stars defender Sylvester Owino has been appointed the new captain of Gor Mahia ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Sources close to Mozzart Sport have confirmed that the experienced centre-back will wear the captain's armband as K'Ogalo begin preparations for what promises to be a demanding campaign across domestic and continental competitions.

"Sili is the new captain of the team heading into the new season," a source familiar with the decision confirmed.

Owino succeeds long-serving skipper Philemon Otieno, who retired from professional football at the end of last season before immediately transitioning into an administrative role as Gor Mahia's new team manager.

The leadership reshuffle was further necessitated by the departures of assistant captain Geoffrey Ochieng, who has completed a move to Kakamega Homeboyz, and Ernest Wendo, another member of the club's leadership group who has since left the record Kenyan champions.

The appointment marks another significant milestone in Owino's rise since joining Gor Mahia from Kakamega Homeboyz in 2022.

Over the past three seasons, the commanding defender has established himself as one of the club's most reliable performers, earning admiration for his composure, leadership qualities, and consistency at the heart of the defense.

His commanding displays have not only made him a mainstay in Gor Mahia's backline but have also cemented his place in the Harambee Stars setup, where he has become a regular feature under the national team.

Those qualities have steadily elevated him within the club's leadership ranks, making him the natural choice to take over the captaincy.

Before joining Kakamega Homeboyz, Owino rose to prominence at Vihiga Bullets, with his impressive performances earning him a move to the league giants.

Since then, he has played a key role in Gor Mahia's defensive stability while growing into one of the senior figures in the dressing room, including playing a significant part in record-extending 22 league titles.

The experienced defender will now shoulder the responsibility of leading Kenya's most successful club into a crucial 2026/27 campaign.
