Unai Simon has been crowned the best goalkeeper of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but there is one statistic that sums up Spain's defensive dominance better than any other.

Spain conceded just one goal in eight matches on their way to lifting the World Cup, the fewest ever by a champion, while Simon finished the tournament with seven clean sheets, a new record in the men's World Cup.
Remarkably, he faced only 11 shots on target throughout the tournament, stopping 10 of them for a save percentage of 90.9 per cent, the best of any goalkeeper in the competition.
Belgium's quarter-final strike was the only time Simon was beaten, ending a World Cup-record run of 650 consecutive minutes without conceding.
Yet the Athletic Club goalkeeper's greatest contribution was not necessarily the saves themselves.
His anticipation, positioning and willingness to race off his line prevented countless dangerous situations from ever becoming shots on goal.
That proactive style has become a cornerstone of Luis de la Fuente's Spain. Confident that Simon would deal with balls played into the space behind them, the European and world champions maintained their trademark high defensive line throughout the tournament.
