Speaking to LetsRun.com, Komen’s agent, Lee Roy Newton, revealed that the 26-year-old has been sidelined while recovering from a hamstring injury that nagged him during the tail end of last season.
As a result, Komen skipped the indoor campaign to focus on rehabilitation.
“He ran the Olympics with quite a severe niggle in his hamstring,” said Newton, who began representing Komen at the end of 2024.
“We took some time off, and he came to South Africa to rehabilitate that. He’s now firing on all cylinders.”
Komen is scheduled to make his 2025 debut in the 1500m at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, 25 May.
He will follow that up with another outing at the Rome Diamond League on Friday, 6 June.
Newton also confirmed that Komen has switched sponsors, moving from Nike to Asics.
Komen, who trains in Iten under coach Eric Kogo and alongside 2023 World Championships 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo, has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past two years.
Despite having run in high school, Komen stepped away from the sport during university, only to return and quickly establish himself as a force in middle-distance running.
He emerged as one of the breakthrough stars of the 2024 track season.
After clocking 3:33.84 in the 1500m in 2023, Komen slashed his personal best to 3:28.80 in Monaco last year, becoming the sixth-fastest man in the world that season.
He capped the year with a victory at the Doha Diamond League and a spot in the Olympic 1500m final in Paris, where he ultimately finished last after battling flu symptoms during the preliminary rounds.
