Gathimba is the World Walking Team Championships bronze medalist.
Four-time African 20km walk champion Samuel Gathimba clocked a personal best time of 39:23.14 while finishing fifth in the men's 10,000m walk.
Gathimba, fresh from finishing in fourth place at the World Athletics championship jn Eugene, Oregon stated with the leading pack, exchanging leads with India's Sandeep Kumar but was dropped to fifth when the pace picked up.
Australia's Declan Tingay pulled first blood, moving ahead of the leaders for the first 5000m and creating a gap of about 20m before the chasing pack could reach to his speed.
Eventual winner Evan Dunfee mounted the chase for the Australian with Kumar and Callum Wilkinson staying with him as Gathimba gave up the chase.
Dunfee caught up with Tingay who appeared to be suffering from the initial pace he had injected into the race.
At the bell, it was the Canadian who had the strength to push and he waited until the back straight to assume lead and, in spectacular fashion, build more than 20m lead as he won in a PB time of 38:36.37 breaking the Games record as well.
Tingay finished second in a PB 38:42.33 ahead of Kumar's new PB of 38:49.21. Wilkinson timed 39:06.28, a season best.
