The groundbreaking ceremony for the 12-acre facility, presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, unveiled plans for a 400-meter mixed-surface track, a standard football pitch and a 10,000-seat arena.
“This is a major step in ensuring our talented athletes in Nandi County get the facilities they deserve to train and compete at international standards,” CS Tuya said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to modernising sports infrastructure.
She added that the project, under KDF supervision, will be delivered “efficiently, on time and to the highest standards.”
Local leaders said the investment marks a turning point for Nandi’s globally recognised athletics culture.
Governor Stephen Sang described the development as transformative not just for sports, but for the county’s identity.
“Today we have made a significant step in enhancing sports infrastructure in our county through the groundbreaking of an ultra-modern Kipchoge Keino Stadium,” he said.
“For our athletes, this will be more than a stadium; it will be a complete high-performance environment.”

He noted that the facility will feature warm-up areas, an indoor gymnasium, strength and conditioning rooms and an accommodation block for residential training camps, allowing athletes to prepare “conveniently and comfortably within the same complex.”
Sang said the project represents more than a physical build.
“This is an investment in our youth, our economy and our identity as a county known for producing world-class athletes.”
The stadium is being implemented by the Nandi County Government under the supervision of KDF through the Ministry of Defence, a partnership officials say ensures discipline, efficiency and strict quality control.
Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Muriru, reflecting on the Ministry’s oversight of Talanta Sports City during a recent inspection, said Defence is currently managing more than 21 stadium projects nationwide as part of President William Ruto’s directive to modernise Kenya’s sports facilities.
“We are delivering these projects on time, to standard and within budget. As instructed by our Commander-in-Chief, they will be done,” he said.
Project architect Major Victor King’e echoed the PS, noting that the execution will mirror the discipline expected of a Defence-led construction.
“This model represents how the stadium will look upon completion. We plan to deliver it to this standard, with military precision,” he said.
The new facility follows the benchmarks set by Talanta Sports City, which is already redefining national sports infrastructure through advanced engineering, international-level installations and integrated training environments.
While Talanta serves as a national multisport hub, the Kapsabet stadium is designed to bring similar standards closer to grassroots talent.
The groundbreaking ceremony drew county and national leaders, including Deputy Governor Dr Yulita Mitei, Nandi Hills MP Josses Lelmengit, Tinderet MP Julius Melly and Brigadier Titus Sokobe, the KDF Chief of Infrastructure.
