Paris Olympics 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi was forced to settle for second place at the Lausanne Diamond League on Wednesday, 20 August, after USA’s Josh Hoey stunned the field with a late surge to win the men’s 800m.
Wanyonyi, who set the current world lead of 1:41.44 in Monaco on July 11 and holds the Lausanne meeting record of 1:41.11 from August 2024, had been the favorite heading into the race.

Learmonth’s compatriot Max Burgin followed in third, keeping the tempo honest in the opening lap.
By the 600m mark, Canada’s Marco Arop pressed forward as Wanyonyi remained steady in second.
Behind them, Hoey began to gather momentum, overtaking to join the leaders.
In a dramatic final sprint, Hoey powered through to clinch victory in 1:42.82, with Wanyonyi unable to respond in time, finishing second in 1:43.29.
Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui completed the podium in 1:43.38. Burgin crossed fourth in 1:43.44, while Arop faded to fifth in 1:43.91.
As per a recent announcement from Diamond League, the 21-year-old Kenyan has already confirmed his place in the Diamond League Final in Zurich, which takes place on 27-28 August.
