Sirikwa Classic to help select team for Africa Cross Country Championships

The Sirikwa Classic meet will be held on February 3 at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.

The country's athletics governing body; Athletics Kenya has announced that the Sirikwa Classic World Continental Tour will be used to select the team for the Africa Cross Country Championships slated for February 25, 2024, in Tunis, Tunisia.

In a statement seen by Mozzart Sport, AK stated that the Sirikwa meet would serve as the best grounds for selecting the team. The Sirikwa meet is a World Athletics Gold-level event, and is expected to attract lots of talents from the athletics-rich region and beyond.

“Kenya will select a team to represent the country. Selection of the team to the championship will be done during the Sirikwa Classic- World Continental Tour to be held on 3rd February at the Lobo Village, Eldoret,” read part of the statement.

The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) last held its biannual competition in 2018 in Chlef, Algeria. Team Kenya topped the medal table after Alfred Barkach and Celliphine Chespol won the men's and women's senior titles as Rhonex Kipruto bagged the under-20 men title, and Ethiopian Girmawit Gebrzihair won the women’s U20.

AK also announced changes in the 2023/24 calendar, citing alterations in the international athletics calendar.

At the same time, the National Cross-Country Championships that were to be held on 24th February have been moved to 9th March 2024.

The national championships will be used to select to Team Kenya for the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia slotted for 30th March 2024.

The 4th AK Track and Field weekend meet that was to be held on 22nd -23rd March in Kisii has been moved to April 5-6, 2024 at the same venue.

AK's regional cross-country meetings are scheduled for this Friday as per the 2023/24 season calendar.

Headlining the calendar will be the Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service cross-country championships at Ulinzi Sports Complex and Ngong Race Course respectively.

AK University cross-country championships will take place on the same day at Kabarak University in Nakuru.

Saturday’s events will include the National Youth Service and Kenya Prisons Service cross-country meet at NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil and Kenya Prisons Staff Training College(PSTC), Ruiru respectively.
