Lokedi will now be itching to make her Olympics debut and will now join the Olympic marathon team camp that are split both in Ngong, Nairobi and Eldoret.

Brigid Kosgei, the 2020 London Marathon champion, has suffered a major blow after an injury forced her out of the 2024 Paris Olympics with Sharon Lokedi replacing her in the Team Kenya's Olympic women’s line up.

Kosgei who has had a topsy-turvy season thus far was confirmed to have suffered an injury by the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) following routine medical assessments.

“It’s during one of the regular monitoring sessions that Olympic silver medalist Brigid Kosgei expressed an injury concern to the technical team. Upon a review by the medical team led by the Chief Medical officer Dr Ondiege, Kosgei will not be heading to Paris for her second Olympics.

"Sharon Lokedi who was named in the reserve team will now join defending Champion Peres Jepchirchir and Hellen Obiri to fly Kenya’s flag in Paris,” the statement read.

Lokedi who was named as Kosgei's replacement in the Team Kenya's Olympic women’s line up will now link up with reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir and Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri.

The 30-year-old will head to Paris fresh from registering impressive performances following her second place finish at the Mastercard New York Mini 10K in early June.

The 2022 New York Marathon champion claimed a similar runners up finish at the the Boston Marathon in mid-April only being beaten by her Team Kenya compatriot Hellen Obiri.

Kosgei has however flattered to deceive following an injury plagued two years, but had displayed signs of improvement by claiming top honours at the Lisbon Half Marathon in March.

Her only other race this season saw her finish a disappointing fifth at the London Marathon that was won by Peres Jepchirchir.

Lokedi will be itching to make her Olympics debut and will now join the Olympic marathon team camp that are split both in Ngong, Nairobi and Eldoret before leaving for Paris, France in August.
