The experienced utility player joined Leopards in August 2021 from defunct Mt. Kenya United, a move that was beneficial to his career, but that also left him with bitter lessons.
In a candid conversation with young and upcoming players during a Soccer Clinic organized by Eleven Eleven TV at MYSA grounds in Komarock, the Kenyan international opened up on his experience as a rookie, joining the Kenyan giants.
“In my first contract at AFC Leopards, I went to negotiate alone, yet I had never signed a contract in my life," said Odhiambo. "We agreed on a sign-on fee of Ksh300,000 but they gave me Ksh50,000, with a promise to channel the rest to my account the following day."
The Makadara Junior League Academy graduate went ahead to disclose how this verbal agreement saw him lose hundreds of thousands.
“They then gave me the contract papers and the amount which I hurriedly signed, having just confirmed the salary. I was coming from the National Super League (NSL) where I did not even have a contract.
The following day, I followed up and I was told that the remaining amount was not in the contract, and therefore will not be paid as the agreement was only verbal,” he added.
From this demotivating experience, the soft-spoken utility man took time to advice young players on how to avoid such ordeals.
“I would therefore urge young and upcoming players to contact an agent to accompany them when signing these contracts," he said. "Should you not be able to afford one, you should tag along either a senior player or a retired player who has signed many contracts, and may be aware, and would not cost much."
