Akumu part of 10 players reportedly facing the axe at Chiefs

Rumours of Anthony Akumu being dropped by Kaizer Chiefs refuse to go away with the latest reports indicating that he is part of 10 players set to be shipped out of the Soweto-based club.

According to South African news outlet The Kosi Bay, Akumu is part of the 10 players set to be axed by the club in a major overhaul with the club underachieving in recent seasons by their high standards.

The 10 players set to be axed include Leonardo Castro, Siphosakhe Ntiya Ntiya, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Kearyn Baccus, Anthony Agay Akumu, Daniel Akpeyi, Lazarous Kambole, Bernard Parker, Daniel Cardoso and Lebogang Manyama.

The Kosi Bay claim Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has been instructed to utilize players who favour his style of play despite their future not being certain with the new Technical Director planning an overhaul.

“Kaizer Chiefs have instructed Stuart Baxter to use all current players who he believes are best suited to play and not to worry about contract issues. However, we have been informed that Kaizer Chiefs is planning a squad overhaul, with the majority of the players set to be released.

However, following the appointment of Kaizer Jnr as technical director, it is thought that he has requested that Kaizer Chiefs begin revamping the squad in order to reduce the average age and prepare for the future, while the team would entrust Arthur Zwane with that vision,” read part of the article.

Akumu joined Chiefs in January 2020 from Zambian giants Zesco United but has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth as he has been on the periphery.

The former Gor Mahia midfielder has only featured for Chiefs nine times this season in the league as he has failed to clock any minutes in the last six matches.
