Al Hilal officially buy 'Mr. Miss'

Darwin Nunez will get 22 million euros every season from the Saudi club

The deal has been in place for some time, with work being done on the details and administrative formalities, so the only question was when Al Hilal would announce one of the biggest transfers in the club’s history. Neymar remains number one (with 90,000,000 euros paid just for the transfer fee), but as of tonight we officially have the second-biggest signing in the history of the wealthy Saudi club — Darwin Nunez (26)! Including bonuses that will almost certainly be paid, Liverpool will pocket around 65,000,000, meaning they have essentially “recouped” the cost of their failed gamble on what was once one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.

Darwin scored 25 goals and provided 16 assists (in 95 matches), so it’s far from true that he made no contribution to the Reds’ recent successes. However, the fact remains that the Uruguayan was expected to deliver a completely different level of performance. Let’s recall that the English side paid Benfica 85,000,000 three years ago, believing they had bought a goal machine — only for the boy who came through Penarol’s academy to be remembered mostly for his misses.

With that in mind, Liverpool haven’t come out of this badly at all. It’s also worth noting that Nunez’s willingness to move to the Middle East at the age of 26 played a big role in this, because had he stayed in Europe, there’s no way such a large sum would have gone into the Reds’ account. Napoli and Milan, both mentioned as potential suitors, likely could not (or would not) have paid even half the amount. Of course, Darwin will be handsomely rewarded for this Arab adventure. And it’s no wonder Al Hilal convinced him so easily. Once you hear the numbers, it all makes sense. The figures show that over three years, the Uruguayan “Mr. Miss” will earn 66,000,000 net — or, if you prefer, 22,000,000 per year.
