Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a near-routine performance at Emirates Stadium, securing a win with a single goal from the captain to book their place in the final of Europe’s top competition
A historic night for Arsenal! A sentence that perfectly captures what unfolded in North London tonight and the magnitude of the match the Gunners played. A goal from Bukayo Saka, the captain—a goal that sent the club into the final of Europe’s top competition—has finally turned the fans’ dreams into reality. In Budapest, on May 30, Arsenal will travel to play one of the most important matches in the club’s history.

Arsenal started the game on the front foot, dominating possession in the early stages, but it was Julian Alvarez who registered the first real attempt in the 8th minute, firing just wide after a cut-back inside the box. The response was immediate, as Riccardo Calafiori tried his luck from distance a minute later, though his effort sailed well over the bar.
From the outset, it was clear this would be a fiercely contested encounter, with strong challenges flying in across the pitch. Atletico nearly capitalized in the 11th minute when Alvarez combined brilliantly with Antoine Griezmann to carve open Arsenal’s defense. Raya managed to parry the initial shot, but the rebound fell kindly for Giuliano Simeone, who seemed certain to score—only for Declan Rice to produce a crucial last-ditch tackle and prevent a goal.

As the half progressed, Arsenal began to assert more control, pushing Atletico deeper. In the 19th minute, Gabriel attempted an ambitious long-range strike from nearly 30 meters, but the shot drifted wide of Oblak’s goal.
Atletico struggled to find rhythm in attack during this period, with both Lookman and Alvarez frequently losing possession and failing to make an impact, as Diego Simeone’s side lacked sharpness in the final third.
Arsenal’s pressure intensified as halftime approached. In the 35th minute, Trossard cut inside and appealed for a penalty after a slight nudge, but play continued. The loose ball fell to Rice, whose powerful strike took a deflection and went off target, signaling growing momentum for the hosts.
That pressure finally paid off right at the end of the half. In the 45th minute, Arsenal found the breakthrough through Bukayo Saka. The move started with a strong run down the right flank by Gyokeres, who combined well with Saliba before picking out Trossard. His shot was parried by Oblak, but Saka reacted quickest in the six-yard box to slot home and give Arsenal a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half between Arsenal FC and Atletico Madrid opened at a furious pace, with the visitors immediately going on the offensive in search of an equaliser.
Just six minutes after the restart, Atlético came within inches of leveling the score. Koke delivered a precise ball into the box toward Simeone, and after a poor reaction from William Saliba, the forward managed to round Raya. However, just as a goal seemed inevitable, Gabriel produced a sensational recovery to clear the danger off the line.

Atletico continued to pile on the pressure in the early stages of the half, growing increasingly dangerous. In the 56th minute, Antoine Griezmann tried his luck from the edge of the area, but Raya was equal to the task, pulling off an excellent save to keep Arsenal in front.
Arsenal responded soon after, showing they had no intention of simply defending their lead. In the 60th minute, newly introduced captain Odegaard wasted no time making an impact, unleashing a shot from around 25 meters that flew just over Jan Oblak’s crossbar.
A few minutes later, the hosts came close to doubling their advantage. In the 66th minute, Gyokeres found himself in a perfect position after a superb delivery from Hincapie, but he failed to keep his effort down, sending the ball over the goal from close range.
Despite Atletico’s strong start, Arsenal gradually took control of the tempo, spending more time in the opposition half and dictating play. However, clear-cut chances remained scarce as the game entered its final stages.
Atletico’s next notable attempt came late on, in the 81st minute, when Marcos Llorente struck from the edge of the box, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Raya.
Arsenal saw the game out almost routinely, securing one of the most important victories in the club’s recent history and booking a place in the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years!
