With limited depth, especially in the backline, Maresca might have to rely on makeshift pairings and push players into unfamiliar roles. Liverpool, meanwhile, are coming off back-to-back losses in all competitions, including a shock 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace and a flat 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in midweek.

There is a lot on the line this Saturday in the English Premier League as Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

This high-stakes fixture features two teams with contrasting forms but similar ambitions: reignite their momentum and stay in touch with the title race.

For Chelsea, it is about getting their season on track under Enzo Maresca.

Despite a relatively favourable opening run, the Blues have taken just 8 points from 6 games, leaving them eighth in the table, seven points behind their opponents.

Their recent league form has been inconsistent (W-L-W-L-L), but a midweek Champions League win over Benfica (1-0) offers a timely boost in confidence.

Chelsea have however been solid at home as evidenced by a single loss at Stamford Bridge this season.

Historically, they have been a tough opponent for Liverpool at the Bridge, as they are unbeaten in their last three league meetings.

Maresca's men started the season well, going unbeaten in their opening four games in the Premier League.

They have, however, struggled since then, losing their last two games.

Their first loss came against Man Utd, in a game which was effectively over as a contest after five minutes when Robert Sanchez was sent off.

They followed that up with a loss against Brighton, although the Blues were able to pick up a win in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Tactically, Chelsea under Maresca are possession-oriented, focusing on fluid build-up and structured pressing.

They average 1.33 goals scored and 1.83 conceded in their last six games, with 83% both teams to score and 83% over 2.5 goals - suggesting entertainment is often guaranteed.

However, the gap between midfield and attack has been problematic in transition, especially when Cole Palmer is not on the pitch to link play.

Chelsea’s injury list is long and damaging, especially in defence.

Key players Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Trevor Chalobah, and Romeo Lavia are all out, and crucially, Cole Palmer - a creative spark - is also sidelined.

Arne Slot’s men still sit top of the table with 15 points, but defensive cracks are widening.

They have conceded in 7 of 9 games this season, and the data suggests their results have been flattering: they have been overperforming their xG and conceding fewer than their xGA, mostly relying on late goals to secure points.

Things started similarly well for Liverpool this season, with the Reds winning all five of their first six games in the league, as well as picking up a win in the League Cup and Champions League.

The past week has not gone to plan though, with Crystal Palace taking all three points off of the Anfield club before they fell to a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Liverpool look wounded and will need to bounce back or risk making it three losses in a row.

The absence of goalkeeper Alisson Becker due to injury is a huge blow.

Hugo's Ekitike and Federico Chiesa are both doubtful, adding to attacking depth concerns.

Still, with Mohamed Salah (3 assists) and Ekitike (4 goals) leading the line, Liverpool’s forward quality remains lethal.

Slot’s system encourages aggressive fullback play and high pressing, but this leaves them vulnerable to counterattacks, particularly against teams with pace on the wings or midfield runners.

With 13 clear-cut chances conceded and 5.96 xGA in their last three matches, they’re exposed when the press is bypassed.

Their attack may be the best form of defence right now, but this leaves their backline overstretched - something Chelsea could exploit, even with their injury issues.

In tactical terms, this match could swing on the midfield battle.

Chelsea need better vertical connections from Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo to their attack.

Without Palmer, Joao Pedro may be tasked with dropping deeper to link play.

On the flanks, Maresca will expect overlaps from Reece James and Marc Cucurella, especially to exploit Liverpool’s advanced fullbacks.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will target Chelsea’s weakened centre-backs with quick transitions and runs in behind.

Salah vs Cucurella could be a decisive mismatch, while midfield runners like Alexis Mac Allister or Ryan Gravenberch might find space between Chelsea’s lines if Fernandez gets isolated.

Expect Liverpool to dominate territory, but Chelsea’s threat in transition remains real.

Key pointers

Chelsea have seen BTTS + over 2.5 goals in five of their last six games.

Liverpool have conceded a staggering 13 clear cut scoring chances and 5.96 combined xG in their last three matches.

Chelsea rank third in clear cut chances created (17), while Liverpool rank tied for fourth (15).

Seven of Liverpool’s 10 matches across all competitions this season have seen BTTS + over 2.5.

BTTS + over 2.5 has come through in the last three league fixtures between these two teams.

This is shaping up to be a game defined by attacking intent and defensive vulnerability.

Liverpool have looked shaky at the back and are missing their world-class keeper, while Chelsea have enough tools - even with their injuries - to expose their opponent’s soft spots.

At the same time, it is hard to see Chelsea keeping Liverpool quiet.

Prediction: Both teams to score
