Co-hosts put Morocco's 33-game unbeaten run to test as place in quarter-finals is up for grabs

The last time the Atlas Lions tasted defeat was against the Harambee Stars last August during the African Nations Championship

Can anyone remember when Morocco last lost a game? Even the most meticulous football experts and fans in this North African country would likely struggle to recall it.

Here's the answer: August 10, 2025. The Atlas Lions have now gone almost a full year - or 33 matches - without defeat. Their last loss was a setback to Kenya 1-0 in the African Nations Championship, when Ryan Ogam sealed their fate with a winner just before half-time.

However, given that the CHAN squads can only include players from the domestic league, the only member of Morocco's current World Cup squad who featured in that defeat to the Harambee Stars is the defender Youssef Belammari.

To find the previous defeat suffered by Morocco's strongest side, one would have to dig even deeper into the history books and go all the way back to January 30, 2024, when Achraf Hakimi and Co. were beaten 2-0 by South Africa in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Since then, Morocco have suffered only two losses overall, both with their home-sided squad: the aforementioned one to the Harambee Stars and another against Burkina Faso in a warm-up match two weeks earlier.

The current squad came through World Cup qualifiers, a series of friendlies, and the 2025 AFCON without losing a single game. Although they were beaten by Senegal after extra time in the final, that result was later overturned into a 3-0 victory by default.

At the 2026 World Cup, Mohamed Ouahbi's men have beaten Scotland and Haiti, drawn against Brazil, and eliminated the Netherlands on penalties.

Tonight, they face co-hosts Canada (20:00), with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. It is one of the few knockout ties in which they will start as favourites.

Can they handle the pressure and keep their remarkable unbeaten run alive?
