Imbayi was among the players spotted by Mozzart Sport during Homeboyz' resumption meeting on Saturday morning, with the club expected to complete his signing ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old is set to join the Mozzart Bet-sponsored side from National Super League (NSL) outfit Fortune Sacco, although the deal is yet to be concluded due to a disagreement between the two clubs.
Also present during the meeting was left back Stephen Bakari, who is expected to complete his move to Homeboyz from Division One side MMUST.
Mozzart Sport understands that while Homeboyz believe the transfer is done, Fortune Sacco maintains that Imbayi remains under contract and insists any club wishing to sign him must pay Ksh900,000.
However, a well-placed source familiar with the negotiations told Mozzart Sport that the midfielder is no longer tied to the NSL side and is free to complete the move.
It is further understood that Fortune Sacco are not keen to stand in the player's way despite signing him from Samitsi FC in January for a fee believed to be in the region of Ksh50,000.
Instead, the club has proposed a swap deal that would see striker Boniface Nyabuto move in the opposite direction.
Nyabuto joined Homeboyz in January from St Joseph's Youth, but Mozzart Sport understands the forward is not interested in joining Fortune, leaving the proposed exchange in doubt.
Imbayi has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in the current transfer window, attracting interest from several FKF Premier League clubs, including newly promoted 3K FC and Murang'a Seal.
Before joining Fortune Sacco, he was one of the standout performers in the Division One League with Samitsi, where his energetic displays in midfield earned him widespread attention.
Homeboyz' interest intensified after the club watched him feature for ProSport during the Erick Marcelo Ouma Foundation Talent Search tournament at Bukhungu Stadium last weekend.
His commanding performance convinced the coaching staff to move quickly for his signature.
A modern box-to-box midfielder, Imbayi combines energy, composure and intelligence in equal measure.
Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, he covers ground relentlessly, breaks up opposition attacks, drives play forward with progressive carries, links defence to attack with accurate passing and times his late runs into the penalty area well.
His ability to win second balls, dictate the tempo and contribute at both ends of the pitch has marked him out as one of Kenya's brightest young midfield prospects.
