Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 11.07.26. | 15:15
These two European sides have been hit hard by a virus over the past few days — we'll soon see what kind of lineups they are able to field tonight
Usually, the biggest concerns before a World Cup quarter-final revolve around injuries, suspensions or tactical decisions. This time, England and Norway have spent the build-up preparing for an opponent neither manager can analyse on video – an illness bug.

While Harry Kane and Erling Haaland are set to headline one of the tournament's most intriguing clashes, Thomas Tuchel and Stale Solbakken have found themselves speaking with team doctors almost as much as their coaching staffs.
England were the first to be affected after midfielder Declan Rice missed consecutive training sessions due to a stomach virus. The Three Lions quickly isolated the Arsenal star in an effort to prevent the illness from spreading through the squad, while Marc Guehi's ongoing hamstring issue has only added to Tuchel's selection headaches ahead of one of England's biggest matches of the tournament.

The England midfielder has been isolated from the squad after contracting a virus and is a major doubt for the clash against Norway. 🤕

Norway, however, have been dealing with similar problems of their own.
Following their stunning Round of 16 victory over Brazil, several Norwegian players reportedly began showing symptoms of illness. Manager Stale Solbakken admitted that members of the squad had been suffering from fever, coughing and fatigue, with the team's demanding travel schedule, changing climates and constant air conditioning believed to have played a role. Captain Martin Odegaard initially downplayed the situation, while team doctor Ola Sand later confirmed that every player had recovered well enough to be available for the quarter-final.

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken has revealed that his squad is battling a wave of illness ahead of Saturday’s historic quarter-final showdown against England in Miami.

As a result, Saturday's showdown has taken on an unusual subplot.
Before either side could focus on reaching the World Cup semi-finals, they first had to overcome an invisible opponent inside their own dressing rooms. The question now is which team will arrive fresher when kick-off gets underway in the hot and humid conditions of Miami, where temperatures above 30°C and the threat of thunderstorms are expected to make an already demanding contest even tougher.
On paper, England still enter the match as slight favourites. Tuchel's men showed resilience by edging past Mexico in a dramatic Round of 16 encounter, while Norway announced themselves as genuine contenders by eliminating five-time champions Brazil.
With Harry Kane leading England's attack and Erling Haaland carrying Norway's hopes, quality is guaranteed on the pitch. Yet after a week dominated by medical updates rather than tactical discussions, this quarter-final may come down to something as simple as which team has recovered better.
Sometimes, the toughest opponent isn't standing on the other side of the halfway line.
