The former Bayern Munich centre-back and Germany international, Niklas Sule, could no longer cope with recurring injuries

When Niklas Sule appeared at Hoffenheim in 2013 as an 18-year-old boy and four years later moved to Bayern Munich for €20 million, the whole of Germany thought they had found a centre-back for the future.

Nevertheless, only 9 years later, the defender decided to hang up his boots at just 30 after being unable to cope with recurring injuries. The latest knee problem he experienced during a clash with his boyhood club a few weeks ago was the last straw.

Sule couldn't take it anymore and admitted defeat.

He announced his retirement in the Spielmacher podcast, sharing an emotional story about his latest injury.

"I want to announce that I will end my career this summer," Sule began his heartfelt statement.

"What I felt when our doctor did the drawer test in the Hoffenheim locker room (a test to detect a possible cruciate ligament tear, ed.), looked at the physio and shook his head, and the physio did it too and didn't feel anything, was when I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes. In that moment, I really thought: 'It's torn.'"

"When I went for the MRI the next day and received the good news (that it wasn't a cruciate ligament tear after all), it was a thousand percent clear to me that it was over. I couldn't imagine anything worse than actually looking forward to the time afterward—being independent, going on vacation, spending time with my children—but then having to process my third cruciate ligament tear," he said as quoted by Borussia Dortmund's official website.

Sule's career was plagued by injuries - from his ACL, muscle, and knee, to his back, ankle, and hamstring, and he just couldn't catch a break.

Hoffenheim, Bayern, and the BVB were the only three clubs he represented in his 13-year career, making 299 appearances in the German top flight.

The spell with the Bavarians was his most decorated, bringing him 14 trophies, including five Bundesliga titles and the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League.

Sule played 49 games for the Germany national team, scoring one goal, and won the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup with Die Mannschaft.

He spent the last four seasons of his career with Dortmund, with which he played a UCL final two years ago.

In the final two league games, Niko Kovac's team will face Eintracht Frankfurt at home and Werder Bremen on the road, and Sule may have one final chance to say goodbye to the packed Signal Iduna Park and the beloved game he devoted his life to.
