The East London side announced their retained and released list after narrowly surviving relegation from League One, with a number of senior players either released or placed on the transfer list as the club begins preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi, alongside Tom James, Jack Simpson, Makai Welch and Diallang Jaiyesimi, will leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts, while Sean Clare, Tyreeq Bakinson, Lemar Gordon, Sonny Perkins and Josh Koroma have all been made available for transfer.

However, Obiero is among the players retained by the club and remains under contract as Orient continue to build around some of their emerging talents despite last season’s struggles.

Obiero’s retention further shows the growing faith the club has placed in the Kenyan midfielder, who has steadily risen through the ranks since joining Leyton Orient from the Tottenham Hotspur academy setup in 2019 at the age of 14.

The midfielder signed his first professional contract in February 2022 before making his senior debut later that year in a League Two clash against Crawley Town.

Since then, the Kenya international has continued to establish himself within the club’s senior setup, making 21 first-team appearances across all competitions.

One of the biggest milestones in his development came during the 2025/26 campaign when he featured eight times in League One before the club sanctioned another temporary move to help him secure regular playing time.

His progress convinced Leyton Orient to hand him a long-term contract extension running until 2028.

As part of his development journey, Obiero has also gained experience through several loan spells away from Brisbane Road.

In February 2023, he joined non-league side Cheshunt on loan, where he made 15 league appearances and scored twice before later moving to Chelmsford City in October 2023 for another short stint.

His latest loan move came in February 2026 when he joined Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season in search of more consistent first-team football.

The midfielder quickly settled into life at Tranmere, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals while becoming a regular figure in midfield.
