The project will also see the stadium expanded from the initially proposed 10,000-seater capacity to a 14,000-seater facility

Just three years after the government pumped hundreds of millions into the facelift of Kiprugut Chumo Stadium, popularly known as Kericho Green Stadium, the facility is once again set for another major round of renovations.

The latest government plan will see fresh funds injected into the stadium’s upgrading works, despite the venue having undergone extensive renovations ahead of the 2023 Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Back in 2023, the national government spent approximately Ksh 483 million on rehabilitation works at the stadium in preparation for the national celebrations.

The project was intended to elevate the facility into a modern 10,000-seater stadium complete with additional steel terraces, upgraded electricity, water and sewerage systems, as well as a rehabilitated athletics track.

However, by the time the Mashujaa Day celebrations were held, sections of the facility were still incomplete, with works ongoing at the venue.

The stadium has also been serving as the home ground for Football Kenya Federation Premier League debutants APS Bomet FC.

Now, the government has unveiled another ambitious upgrade plan that is expected to further expand and modernize the stadium.

According to Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, the latest phase of renovations will include the construction of a standard football pitch, modern athletics track, VIP pavilion, changing rooms and other key sporting amenities.

The project will also see the stadium expanded from the initially proposed 10,000-seater capacity to a 14,000-seater facility.

In a statement issued after an inspection tour of the venue, Mwangi said the government was keen on reviving sports infrastructure within the South Rift region.

The fast-tracking of the rehabilitation works at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in Kericho County promises to revitalize sports activities in the region,” read part of the statement.

“Through the Whole-of-Government Approach, we continue to work closely with the Defence Ministry and County Governments to transform this facility into a sporting gem.”

Mwangi added that the stadium would play a significant role in nurturing talent and commercializing sports within the region.

“The stadium will give Kericho County a standard football pitch, athletics tracks, VIP pavilions, expansion to 14,000 seater capacity and other essential amenities to catalyze the growth of sports in the region and beyond,” he stated.

The Sports PS further revealed that the ongoing works at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium and the planned upgrading of Kapkatet Stadium are part of broader government efforts aimed at strengthening the sporting ecosystem in Kericho County.

“Similarly, the upgrading works for the 10,000-seater Kapkatet Stadium will mark a significant milestone in enhancing the sports ecosystem in Kericho,” he added.

“A region renowned for diverse sporting talents, the two facilities will accelerate the realization of an energized sports landscape that supports talent development, community empowerment and commercialization of sports.”

Mwangi toured the facilities alongside Defence PS Patrick Mariru, Kericho Governor Eric Mutai and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot among other leaders.

The latest renovation phase at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium is expected to cost approximately Ksh 500 million, potentially pushing the total expenditure on the facility to between Ksh 850 million and Ksh 1.2 billion once all phases of development are completed.

The new works, which will be supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces, are projected to take nine months, with completion expected next year.

At the same time, Kapkatet Stadium will also undergo renovations concurrently, with works at the facility expected to take six months before completion.

Once completed, Kiprugut Chumo Stadium will join the growing list of sports facilities across the country being upgraded into modern sports complexes including Migori Stadium, Thika Stadium,Moi Stadium Kisumu and Gusii Stadium as the government continues to intensify efforts aimed at improving sports infrastructure and talent development nationwide.
