Wangaya, speaking during the awarding ceremony on Friday, 8 May, said he was motivated by Aroko’s exploits in the league this season, which also ended up with the latter winning the player of the month gong for the month of February.
“Seeing Aroko win the award earlier in the season was a big motivation for me, it showed me what was possible,” Wangaya, who scored three goals and bagged three assists in five matches throughout April, said.
“The last month he [Aroko] won I was happy for him. I also voted for him, because he was having a good run; scoring and assisting” Wangaya said of his Kenya Under 20 teammate, who had two goals and two assists in four league matches in February.
In winning the award, Wangaya, who beat Kenya Police goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo and fellow teammate Michael Karamor, becoming the latest young player to be feted this season.
At 20 years, the Ligi Ndogo graduate became the second youngest player to win the accolade this season, after Aroko, who is 17.
On that, Wangaya said: “It is so nice to see other players you know perform so well, like Aroko, I played with him in the national team, I am happy for him, myself and the team.
The young players have stepped up, and are also trying to prove something that young players need chances to play in the Premier League, and we are showing it now. I encourage other young players to kep showing up and fighting hard.”
As fate would have it, the two best buddies collide this weekend, when Nairobi United visit Kariobangi Sharks at the Police Sacco Grounds on Sunday, 10 May.
