FKF launch Women football strategy five years down the line

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has on Wednesday, 14 July, launched a women's football strategy that hopes to thoroughly exploit, grow and develop the women's game in all spheres and guide Kenya's vision of qualifying for the Women’s World Cup. 

FKF argue that women's football development has experienced challenges over the years largely due to lack of established structures and pathways for aspiring women footballers, coaches and administrators. 

"We are working towards a massive undertaking that will see the us grow the entire scope of the game from grassroot to national level. Women's football is where we have made our biggest strides. Today, we have witnessed changes and milestones. This strategy key plan is to be in the 2023 and 2027 World Cups," said FKF Nick Mwendwa. 

"In terms of numbers, we currently have 2800 girls participating in football and we are looking to build that number to at least 50,000 within the same timeline. With our mission of popularising the game and making it the number one team sport choice for girls and women in the country, we will be able to achieve that," added Mwendwa. 

FIFA launched a women's football strategy in 2018 and soon after Confederation of African Football (CAF) did the same. 

FIFA's first-ever global strategy for women's football is seeking to double the size of the global women's game by 2026. Eight-year targets include doubling the number of female players to 60 million as well as doubling the number of member associations with organised youth leagues.

"We have to look at women's football ecosystem as a whole and while you have launched a strategy, the work now begins to implement and that's the most important part of this journey that you have started. As FIFA, we are here to walk the journey with you," said Chief Women's Football Officer Sarai Bareman in her message to FKF during the launch.
