Former Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno finally tasted victory on Tanzanian soil after steering Tanzania Prisons to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) FC on Saturday, 27 September.
The experienced tactician, who took over the Mbeya-based outfit in July, had endured a rocky start to life in the Tanzanian Premier League, succumbing to successive 1-0 defeats against Coastal Union and Namungo FC in his opening two matches.
Pressure was already beginning to mount on the veteran coach, who boasts a wealth of managerial experience in Kenyan football, having previously handled Gor Mahia, KCB, and the Harambee Stars in various capacities.
Saturday’s breakthrough victory came courtesy of Oscar Mwajanga, whose decisive strike not only secured the crucial three points but also lifted the spirits of the “Wajelajela.”
The result marked Prisons’ first win of the 2025/26 NBC Premier League season, propelling them out of the relegation zone, where they had been languishing in 15th place without a point.
They now sit 11th on the log with three points, signaling a potential turnaround in fortunes.
With the Tanzanian league proving increasingly competitive, the coach will now be keen on building momentum when Prisons face city rivals Mbeya City FC in their next outing.
A second successive victory would not only consolidate their position in mid-table but also strengthen belief within the squad that survival—and perhaps even a push into the top half—is well within reach.
Notably, the match also had a Kenyan flavor, with former KCB defenders Maurice Ojwang and Rama Mwenda featuring prominently in the starting lineup for Prisons.
