Despite not playing a single minute against Mexico, the England international somehow managed to suffer a bizarre self-inflicted injury during the post-match celebrations

Will England's place in the World Cup quarterfinals now be overshadowed by an unfortunate twist of fate? The Three Lions edged past Mexico in a thrilling 3-2 contest to book their spot in the last eight, but their celebrations were interrupted by a freak injury involving Jordan Henderson, who wasn't even on the pitch when the final whistle blew.

As is customary, the England squad made their way to the supporters behind the goal, joining them in singing "Wonderwall" after the dramatic victory. However, as the players and staff attempted to climb back over the advertising boards and return to the field, chaos unfolded.

Caught in the middle of a crowded group, Henderson slipped while trying to vault the barrier. He lost his balance after one hand gave way, landing heavily on his arm in obvious agony.

Medical personnel reacted immediately, treating the veteran midfielder on the touchline before placing him on a stretcher and taking him through the tunnel at the Azteca Stadium. Not long after, reports began to emerge suggesting he may have suffered a fractured arm.

Speaking shortly after the match, England captain Harry Kane remained hopeful that the injury would not be too serious. "Jordan just fell down there. I think he's okay. It's just something with his arm," the Bayern striker told the BBC following England's successful round of 16 victory.

Manager Thomas Tuchel, however, struck a much more concerned tone during his post-match press conference. He revealed that Henderson had been transported to the hospital for further assessment and admitted the situation looked worrying.

"My feelings are mixed, also because Jordan injured his wrist. He's in the hospital right now, which shows how serious it is. I don't know the exact diagnosis and I don't know what will happen to him now. Whether he has to stay here or not, I don't know. We're celebrating and thinking of Jordan at the same time."
