Girona defeat Barca and promote Real as champions

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 04.05.24. | 21:46

Girona won 4-2 and also secured it's Champions League spot for the first time in history

It's only uncertain in the Premier League. In the other top national leagues in Europe, everything is clear: Inter strolled to the Scudetto in Italy, Paris Saint-Germain will be the best in France, Bayer Leverkusen stylishly ended Bayern's dominance in German football, and Real Madrid reclaimed the throne in Spain. The Royal Club won their 36th title because their expected victory over Cadiz (3-0) was backed by Barcelona's mishap in the second half away at Montilivi and their collapse against Girona. The Spanish surprise of the season defeated their provincial rivals in the Catalan derby 4-2, handing the trophy to Carlo Ancelotti.

According to everything seen this season, it's well deserved. Real won both El Clásico matches (including the one in the Spanish Super Cup final), defeated Girona even though they had been a long-standing challenger and unexpectedly threatened to be champions, earned the most points both at home and away, suffered only one defeat at the beginning of the cycle in the city derby against Atletico, but remained consistent throughout. If it is true that trophies are won in weaker matches, Real never made a mistake. Unlike their competitors who dropped points at venues like Vallecas, El Madrigal, San Mamés, and even against the relegated Granada.

This is Real's 36th title and only the second with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm. The previous one, two years earlier, was also won in a convincing manner, with 13 points more than Barcelona, who, after their collapse in the neighbourhood, is now in danger of missing out on the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup, next winter in Saudi Arabia. At first glance insignificant, but Girona has surpassed Barcelona and is now in a position to dream of even competing for the third most important trophy in Spain. Even more importantly: with the victory, Girona officially confirmed their participation in the Champions League for the first time in history, thus crowning a season to remember. Almost perfect.
