Already holding a six-point advantage at the summit prior to kickoff, Gor Mahia knew that victory would move them a significant step closer to a record-extending 22nd league crown.

For Homeboyz, the stakes were equally compelling.

Sitting fourth on 47 points, the Kakamega-based outfit sought to salvage pride and reignite their push for a top-three finish after an inconsistent campaign.

The match burst into life at a frenetic pace, with both sides asserting early intent.

The hosts threatened first inside five minutes when Derrick Otanga, handed a rare start, latched onto a long delivery from Eston Omengo but failed to keep his effort on target.

Gor Mahia responded almost immediately through Shariff Musa, whose dazzling footwork created space for a low drive, only for a timely defensive intervention to deny him.

The early exchanges set the tone for a pulsating first half, punctuated by end-to-end action and near misses.

Homeboyz came close in the 10th minute when Thiong’o controlled a lofted pass from John Omondi and weaved past his marker, but his low effort was expertly thwarted by Michael Kibwage

Moments later, Gor Mahia’s Lawrence Juma nearly broke the deadlock, his curling attempt drifting narrowly wide after slicing through the Homeboyz defence.

The hosts continued to press, with captain Moses Mudavadi showcasing determination and drive, only to be denied by another crucial intervention from Kibwage.

Gor Mahia, however, remained equally dangerous on the counter, with Musa and Alpha Onyango both squandering promising opportunities.

As the half wore on, chances continued to flow.

Mudavadi came agonizingly close ten minutes before the break, his powerful header from a set-piece rattling the woodwork after a fine save from goalkeeper Bryne Omondi

Thiong’o and Otanga also had gilt-edged chances but failed to convert, ensuring the teams went into halftime deadlocked.

The second half resumed with similar intensity, though clear-cut chances became harder to come by.

Substitute Samuel Odaro tested Omondi early on, while Omengo’s curling effort briefly unsettled the Gor Mahia defence.

Gor Mahia introduced fresh attacking impetus, with Ebenezer Assiafuh, Ben Stanley and Samuel Kapen adding urgency in the final third.

Kapen, in particular, delivered a dangerous low cross that narrowly evaded Alpha in what proved a pivotal moment.

As the clock ticked down and the contest appeared destined for a stalemate, Gor Mahia found their breakthrough in dramatic fashion.

A surging run down the left by Ben Stanley culminated in a teasing cross into the box, which Thiong’o inadvertently turned into his own net under pressure—silencing the home crowd and handing the visitors a priceless lead in the dying moments.

The narrow victory sees Gor Mahia extend their lead at the top to nine points over AFC Leopards, completing a double over Homeboyz reinforcing their march towards yet another historic league triumph.

For Kakamega Homeboyz, the defeat dents their ambitions of a top-three finish, leaving them with ground to recover as the season edges towards its conclusion.
