Homeboyz had kicked off the season with a barren draw against Mara Sugar while Sofapaka were coming off a 2-0 defeat to Gor Mahia
Kakamega Homeboyz registered their first win of the 2025/26 FKF Premier League campaign after edging out Sofapaka 1-0 in an encounter played on Friday afternoon at Dandora Stadium.
A third-minute strike from new signing Josphat Lopaga was all the 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup champions needed to claim maximum points and ease early-season pressure.

Coming into the clash, both sides were desperate to end their winless start after failing in previous attempts.
Homeboyz wasted no time asserting their dominance as Lopaga latched onto Eugene Ochieng's precise delivery, calmly slotting home past Victor Kamungo in the Sofapaka goal.
The early breakthrough gave the Kakamega-based outfit confidence, but it also triggered a fierce response from Batoto ba Mungu.
Six minutes later, Sofapaka nearly restored parity when Douglas Kibet broke free from Andrew Waswa’s clever ball, but goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe reacted sharply, rushing off his line to deny the forward with a crucial left-footed block.
Moments later, Lopaga almost doubled his tally after capitalising on a loose ball, but his effort flew narrowly off target.
Sofapaka, determined not to leave empty-handed, pushed men forward with Kibet and Donato Okello combining dangerously, only for the latter to wastefully blaze his attempt wide.
Their persistence nearly paid off when Koech tested Ochieng with a stinging low drive, but the Homeboyz defence stood resolute.
At the other end, Hillary Otieno came close to widening the gap, forcing Kamungo into a brave save as the first half ended with Homeboyz holding onto their slim lead.
After the restart, Sofapaka returned the brighter of the two sides, piling early pressure.
Kibet’s quick free-kick almost caught Mukolwe off guard, but the Homeboyz custodian remained alert.
The hosts, however, had their chances to kill off the game, with substitutes Henry Omollo and Oliver Majaka both spurning opportunities that could have sealed the contest.
The final quarter of the game was a test of character, with Sofapaka throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser.
Still, the Homeboyz defence, marshalled with discipline and composure, held firm to ensure Lopaga’s early goal carried the day.
