Shikangwa’s second stint with Simba came to an end after a competitive campaign that saw the club finish second in the Tanzanian Women’s Premier League, narrowly losing the title to JKT Queens, who will now represent Tanzania at the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers.
Despite the team falling short, the 2023/24 season was a standout one for Shikangwa, who netted 24 league goals, just one shy of the golden boot winner.
Her departure comes amid a major squad overhaul at Simba, who released 11 players as part of a rebuilding process for the upcoming season. Fellow Kenyans Wincate Kaari and Carolyne Rufa were also among those released by the Msimbazi-based side.
The former Vihiga Queens forward has ruled out returning to Kenya and is instead focused on securing a move abroad, specifically to Europe. She revealed that her departure from Simba had been planned from the moment she signed her one-year deal in January 2024.
“It’s true I decided to leave Simba after my contract ended. When I joined in January, I had already made it clear that I would only stay for a year. I feel it’s time for a new challenge, and there's a strong possibility I’ll be joining a new team in Europe soon, something my agent is actively working on,” she told Citizen Digital.
Shikangwa also expressed gratitude to Simba for giving her the platform to grow and succeed.
“I’m really thankful to Simba for the opportunity. Finishing as top scorer in my first season and runners-up in the second isn’t easy, it shows the results of hard work, focus, and determination. I’ll always be grateful and will be ready to return if the European opportunity doesn’t materialize.”
Shikangwa is expected to announce her next move in the coming weeks.
