Stars played Gambia and Seychelles earlier this month.

Kenya’s men’s national football team, Harambee Stars, have dropped two places in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday. The team is now ranked 111th, down from 109th in July.

Stars were in action earlier this month against Gambia and Seychelles in World Cup qualifiers, both at home. They lost 3-1 to Gambia, a result that ended Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup. The second game was a 5-0 triumph over Seychelles.

The loss to Gambia, ranked below Kenya, has come at a cost, contributing to the drop in the rankings. Gambia, meanwhile, have moved one place up and are now ranked 115th.

Coach Benni McCarthy faced criticism for benching key players who had impressed during CHAN in the game against Gambia, where Kenya went down 3-0 inside the first 30 minutes, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

McCarthy defended his decision, stating that World Cup qualifiers are a different challenge.

"People want me to take a risk and play CHAN players. This is international level, and you saw the shortcomings we had with players at this level. This is no ordinary game," McCarthy said during his press conference.

Globally, European champions Sapin have climbed to the top of the rankings, overtaking Argentina, who dropped to third. France moved up to second. Slovakia recorded the biggest rise, climbing ten places to 42nd, while Zimbabwe had the largest drop, falling nine places to 125th.

In Africa, Morocco have moved up one place to lead the continent and sit 11th globally. Senegal remain second in Africa and 18th in the world, while Egypt are third on the continent and 35th globally.

In East Africa, Uganda remain top at 82nd globally, followed by Tanzania in 107th position, and then Kenya.
