Tottenham star suffers devastating knee injury as Spurs' survival fight takes another major hit
Xavi Simons has been left "heartbroken" after a devastating knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the season with Tottenham Hotspur - and crushed his hopes of playing at the FIFA World Cup.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off during Spurs' narrow 1-0 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, after a collision with defender Hugo Bueno. Though he initially tried to continue, Simons quickly went down again, with early reports pointing to a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

What followed was confirmation of the worst-case scenario - not only is his club season over, but so too is his chance to represent the Netherlands on the biggest stage.
"They say life can be cruel, and today it feels that way," Simons wrote in an emotional message. "My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm still trying to process it. Honestly, I'm heartbroken. None of it makes sense."
The timing could hardly be worse for Tottenham. With just four games remaining in the Premier League season, Spurs sit 18th, two points adrift of safety and locked in a desperate battle to avoid relegation. Losing one of their key attacking outlets at such a critical moment is a major blow.
For Simons, however, the pain runs even deeper. The 2026 World Cup - set to be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico - was meant to be a defining moment in his young career, with the Netherlands due to kick off their campaign against Japan on June 14.
"All I've wanted is to fight for my team, and now that ability has been taken from me… along with the World Cup," he added. "Representing my country this summer just gone."
Despite the setback, Simons struck a defiant tone, vowing to support his teammates and return stronger.
"It will take time to come to terms with this, but I'll be the best teammate I can be. I have no doubt we'll win this fight. I'll walk this path with faith, strength and belief - counting down the days until I'm back. Be patient with me."
A long road to recovery now lies ahead - one that begins with heartbreak, but could yet end in redemption.
