Hits and misses: Spain’s Morata continues to frustrate in another disappointing draw

Spain enjoyed a lion’s share of possession, but struggled to use it as Robert Lewandowski snatched a point for Poland

Poland battled to a point against a Spain on another bitterly frustrating night for the widely criticised striker Alvaro Morata. He is an enigma. He does all the right things as a striker – but he keeps missing chances. It may not be fair to criticise a player for missing chances on a night when he put one away, but Morata was booed once more by his own fans in Seville.

All the pressure of La Furia Roja was in wain as the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Robert Lewandowski scored a fantastic header to level the score for Poland after that man Morata opened the scoring in the first half. Just like it was in the clash against Sweden a few days earlier, Spain had the ball for long stretches of the match, but were unable to make their domination count. And they couldn’t have had a better chance than they’ve had – they’ve missed a penalty.

Villareal striker Gerard Moreno had a chance to make it 2-1 shortly after Lewa’s leveller, but his penalty bounced off the post and into the path of Morata. The Juventus hitman had the entire goal in front of him as the ball fell for him nicely, but his volley ended up way off the target to the disgust of the Spanish supporters.

Spain tried to win it late on with wave after wave of attacks, but the brave Poles held on to secure a point thanks to their talisman striker Lewandowski.

Maybe Alvaro Morata should watch a few videos of Robert Lewandowski to see how it’s done.
