Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Patrick Odhiambo has admitted that Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Tusker FC at Bukhungu Stadium has slightly slowed down their momentum at the top of the FKF Premier League table.

The hosts were forced to come from behind to salvage a point after substitute Oliver Majaka’s late strike cancelled out Dennis Oalo’s opener for the Brewers.

The result meant Homeboyz remain top of the standings with 14 points from seven matches — just one point ahead of Gor Mahia and two above AFC Leopards, both of whom have a game in hand.

Speaking after the match, Odhiambo expressed mixed emotions about the result, acknowledging his team’s fighting spirit but lamenting the loss of focus that led to Tusker’s goal.

“I’m happy but not content because we have conceded an easy goal. We had individual mistakes that led to that goal, but I thank the players for their character and for the comeback they mounted until we equalised,” said Odhiambo.

“This draw has really slowed us down a little, more so being at home. We expected to get three points, but all in all, we thank God for that result.”

Tusker took the lead in the 61st minute through substitute Dennis Oalo, who latched onto Fabian Adikiny’s clever through ball before lofting a delicate chip past goalkeeper Eugene Mukolwe.

The Brewers appeared on course for all three points until Majaka, introduced in the second half, reacted fastest to a poorly cleared ball in the dying minutes and unleashed a thunderous strike past Brian Opondo to rescue a point for the home side.

Despite the late equaliser, Odhiambo pointed out that lapses in concentration remain his team’s biggest concern.

“The only problem that I saw affected us was concentration. There’s a time when we lose focus a little, and that’s when we are caught easily,” he said.

“When you look at it in general, our play and build-up as we move forward is fine. It’s just the issue of concentration — that’s where we have a small problem. For example, the goal we conceded was just a lack of concentration, a clumsy mistake.”

The tactician, however, praised his side’s progress in terms of gameplay and resilience, adding that they will work on the minor issues ahead of their next fixture.

“Our next match is away against Mathare, and it will be a tough one because they are very upright tactically. We’ll try to correct where we haven’t been perfect and sharpen where we have been doing well.”

Kakamega Homeboyz have been among the standout performers in the opening weeks of the 2025/26 FKF Premier League season. However, with Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards closing in, the Homeboyz boss knows that maintaining focus will be key if they are to sustain their title challenge.
