The Catalans moved ahead of Bayern and are already in official talks

It started as a rumor and by today, it became a reliable news: Barcelona have submitted an offer for Anthony Gordon! A number of (un)real transfer targets are connected with the Catalans every season, regardless of their financial troubles, which started (officially) with Lionel Messi’s shocking exit from the club in 2021. The latest one was about Julian Alvarez, who signed for Atletico Madrid two seasons ago, but was already ‘seen’ in Barcelona this year. The rumors grew stronger when Robert Lewandowski announced that he was leaving, which left La Liga champions without a single striker in the club. But his price, which is to be around 100 million euros was too much for Joan Laporta so when first reports about Anthony Gordon came out, the feeling was just the same – it was just rumors.

In theory, after deciding not to go for Marcus Rashford, the Catalans need a winger as well as a striker, and Gordon fits the bill, since he can play on both wings and is lighting quick. The England international was excellent in the Champions League this season and was on Bayern Munich’s radar. Unlike Barcelona, they do have 80 million pounds but they wanted to negotiate this price tag. While they were contemplating, Barcelona moved in quickly and not only agreed terms with the player, but all but agreed to reach the 80 million figure! Reliable sources like Mundo Deportivo. Marca and Athletic all confirmed it, so out of nowhere, the Spanish champions somehow found the money and are seriously going for Gordon.

Barca sporting director Deco was in London for a series of meetings with potential targets in the days prior to the FA Cup final and is understood to have met Gordon's camp. He also used that opportunity to meet Joao Pedro’s agents but Chelsea have no desire to sell. Arsenal was also interested in Gordon, but the Spanish giant surprisingly moved in first. They see Gordon as better option than Rushford, mainly due to his age, which will give them an option for a longer contract, but his wage demands are also lower than Rashford’s which is also an important factor. It was expected that Gordon would live Newcastle for some time, and coach Eddie Howe even left him out of the squad in recent games, citing that he was ‘looking at the future”.
