Two second half goals by Jaffary Owiti and Boniface Munyendo helped AFC Leopards edge Ulinzi Stars 2-1
AFC Leopards came from a goal down to beat Ulinzi Stars 2-1 in a friendly match staged at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Friday midmorning.
Enosh Ochieng had given Ulinzi Stars a first half lead before Leopards responded with quick second half goals from Jaffari Owiti and Boniface Munyendo.
Leopards paraded a team consisting of six new signings in the first eleven with Humphrey Katasi, Brian Mandela, Emmanuel Lwanga, Boniface Munyendo, Kevin Kimani and Yassin Sije all starting.
For Ulinzi, Michael Wanyika, Ben Stanley, Nicholas Omondi, Herrit Mungai, Benjamin Mosha and Faraj Ominde all new in the team were named in the starting squad.
Nine minutes into a game that had been largely balanced, the soldiers went ahead from the spot. Mandela was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and a spot kick was awarded. Seasoned forward Enosh Ochieng stepped forward to beat Katasi from 12 yards.
There was little to write home after the opener apart from endless challenges that affected the flow of the game. In teams of chances, Leopards struggled to create much going forward while the soldiers looked a little sharper. Ulinzi took a narrow lead to the break.
Second half
The start of the second stanza was equally robust, with tackles flying from both teams.
Against the run of play, Leopards got the leveler through Jaffari Owiti who headed home a Yassin Sije cross and a minute later, Boniface Munyendo gave Ingwe the lead through a ferocious deflected shot. Kevin Kimani should have made it 3-0 in the 65th minute but Wanyika pulled a huge save to deny him on a one on one situation.
Both teams rang changes late on as Leopards held on to pick a win in the game despite Kayci Odhiambo seeing red late on.
