The 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup champions will be glad to return to winning ways after flopping in the past three rounds
Kakamega Homeboyz ended their three-game winless run after edging Posta Rangers 2-0 in an FKF Premier League match played at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Sunday.
The 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup champions had been on a poor run, heading into the match, having settled for a 1-1 draw in their home matches against Tusker and Murang'a Seal, before losing to Mathare United in their last match.
The Mailmen were equally on a bad run, having gone for five games without a win, results that saw them drop from the early title race talks.
In a bid to strengthen his attack, whom he had blamed for their bad run, Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo handed former Gor Mahia striker Gideon Bendeka a starting berth, with Henry Omollo, who was off-colour against Mathare dropping to the bench.
Homeboyz, playing at home, began the match on the front foot and had their first attempt on goal in the seventh minute when Peter Thing’o rose high, but headed over the bar from a cross from Boniface Onyango.
The Kakamega-based side drew even closer to an opener in the 12th minute, when John Omondi controlled an Estone Omengo delivery, but he slammed the ball against the woodwork.
Posta grew into the game and looked threatening through quick attacking passes, with Eliud Lokuwam and Caleb Olilo leading the chase for goals.
Former Gor Mahia midfielder Rodgers Ouma broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball in box, before driving a low shot past Bixente Otieno.
In the second half, Posta pushed more for an equalizer, prompting Homeboyz Odhiambo to bring on Omollo and Hillary Juma foandendeka and Joshua Nyatini respectively.
The two substitutes combined well in the 80th minute, Omollo driving to the line and whipping a cut back that Juma slotted home to double the lead for the host.
Powered by Mozzart Bet, Homeboyz are second on the league table with 18 points, one shy of league leaders Gor Mahia, while Posta remain sixth with 13 points as their winless run extends to six matches.
