'Kane to Barca? They don't have the money'

Bayern's honorary president took a dig at Barcelona's wish to buy their striker

Bayern finally lifted the DFB-Pokal last night, completed the domestic double, and can now fully focus on strengthening the squad for next season. Several names continue to be heavily linked with the club — Anthony Gordon and Josko Gvardiol most prominently in recent days — but one of the top priorities for Bayern’s sporting department over the coming weeks will be finalizing contract extension talks with Harry Kane (32), whose current deal expires in 12 months. Honorary president and chairman of the supervisory board Uli Hoeness was particularly inspired before and after the final against Stuttgart. And as is well known, when Hoeness is in that kind of mood, the media never lack headlines.

He first sent a “message” to Jose Mourinho regarding speculation about a potential transfer of the French winger to Real Madrid: “He can look at him with five pairs of eyes, but he won’t get him.” He then moved on to the reported efforts of Joan Laporta to convince Harry Kane to follow the well-trodden path of Robert Lewandowski — from Munich to Barcelona. As is already known, Lewandowski is leaving Camp Nou after four years and 120 goals, and Barça reportedly see Kane as the ideal successor to the Polish striker. Naturally, making that happen would be anything but easy. One could even call it mission impossible.

Harry is the best signing in Bayern’s history, there is no longer any doubt about that,” Hoeness said. “Barcelona want him? I’ve heard that from the media… But you know very well that we are not a club that sells its best players — we buy them”. Asked whether he was confident Kane would stay, Hoeness answered clearly: “Yes.” Then, smiling — almost mockingly — he added: “Besides, Barcelona don’t have the money for him anyway…”.

Even Kane himself tried to play down rumors about Barcelona.

We wanted to hold conversations until the end of the season and we’ve got a World Cup still to play. But everyone knows how much I enjoy it here. That situation is calm. 'In terms of the Premier League, I don’t know. If you had asked me when I first left to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure I would come back. Now I have been there a couple of years I would probably say that has gone down a little bit, but I wouldn’t say I would never go back. I am fully all in with Bayern. If there was a conversation about extending then we will see, but I have still got this season and another season. It is not like I am in my last year, it is not like there is any panic. I am calm, I love the manager at Bayern and as long we are improving and I am improving then I am happy to see what we can achieve“ said the England captain.
