The disciplined forces outfit, through their official Instagram handle, confirmed the capture of the experienced midfielder on a one-year contract.
"Kenyan club KCB team captain Michael Mutinda, a defensive midfielder, has signed a one-year contract with Tanzania Prisons Sports Club,” the club announced, signalling yet another Kenyan arrival in Tanzania’s top flight.
Mutinda leaves behind a strong legacy at KCB, where he rose through the ranks to become one of the most influential players and a long-serving skipper.
His leadership and calm presence in midfield made him a pillar for the Bankers, and his departure marks the end of a seven-year era in the Nairobi-based side.
The move also highlights a growing trend of Kenyan talent crossing into the Tanzanian Premier League.
In recent years, Tanzania has opened its doors to a host of Kenyan players, including Francis Kahata, who featured for Simba SC; two-time FKF Premier League Most Valuable Player Eric Kapaito, who turned out for Namungo FC.
Others include Kenneth Muguna, who featured for Azam FC, Duke Abuya, now with reigning champions Yanga SC, and Brian Eshihanda, who recently signed for Pamba Jiji, among others.
For Tanzania Prisons, Mutinda is the sixth new addition as the club rebuilds for the new campaign.
Other fresh signings include Omary Mbuji, Masoud Cabaye, Neva Kaboma, Emmanuel Mtumbuka and Heritier Lulihoshi.
Reports further suggest that Mutinda’s former KCB teammate, defender Maurice Ojwang, is also on the verge of sealing a switch to the same club, with an announcement only imminent.
The Mbeya-based side, fondly known as Wafungwa, finished 13th last season on 31 points, just eight clear of relegation and are keen to bolster their ranks to push higher up the table.
The move also reunites Mutinda with coach Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno, who worked with him at KCB for close to three seasons.
Zico was unveiled as Tanzania Prisons head coach in July, weeks after his exit from Gor Mahia, and is tasked with steering the club to a stronger finish this season.
