His promotion comes barely three years since he joined the military
Harambee Stars winger Boniface Muchiri has been promoted in the military following his outstanding performance in the CHAN 2024 tournament.
Muchiri registered two assists as Stars reached the quarterfinals of the tournament that concludes on Saturday at Kasarani Stadium.
After the conclusion of Kenya's journey in the tournament, Muchiri who also serves in the military returned to his Kenya Army base and FKF Premier League side Ulinzi Stars where he is the captain.
The former Tusker FC winger received a major boost to his career on Wednesday 27 August when he was promoted to a higher rank in a ceremony presided over by the Chief of Defense Forces General Charles Kahariri.
“Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, today presided over the promotion of Harambee Stars player and Ulinzi Stars Football Club Captain, Senior Private Boniface Muchiri, to the rank of Corporal in recognition of his outstanding performance at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN),” read a Facebook post by the Kenya Defense Forces.
Muchiri's promotion comes on the backdrop of Harambee Stars' CHAN captain Abud Omar's request to President Ruto who is the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), to promote him.
The request came on 16 July when the President visited the team's training session at Kasarani Annex.
In a separate visit to the team on Monday 11 August following their historic 1-0 win over Morocco, Ruto assured Muchiri of promotion.
“We mtu wangu, ile maneno mimi ninapanga. Usijali. (My friend, I am organizing that deal. Do not worry),” said President Ruto.
With the promotion, Muchiri has skipped the rank of Lance Corporal and moved higher to a Corporal, that is ideally achieved after six to eight years of military service.
His promotion comes barely three years since he joined the military. The 29-year-old was recruited to the army in January 2022.
Kenya who were in the ‘Group of Death’ alongside Morocco, Angola, DR Congo and Zambia managed to finish on top of the pool but were unfortunate to be eliminated by Madagascar in the quarter final.
