The 2024 Mozzart Bet Cup champions, Kenya Police FC, went into the round of 16 of the domestic cup fully alert of the challenge that lay in front of them.

A defending FKF Premier League champion facing a team four tiers below them in a cup competition looks like a mismatch on paper, but coach Nicholas Muyoti’s charges knew better not to rest on their laurels in the match.
BB Bread, their challengers on the day, had felled both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in previous rounds of the competition successively, and these are teams way above Police in the premiership standings this season.
It would be better to take no hostages in the contest, just take care of business as early as possible and not even give the youngsters from Kayole any hope in the tie. They did just that.
Eric Zakayo’s long-range strike was deflected in for 1-0 within 10 minutes, beating Ezekiel Owade in goal. It is the goal that would settle the tie and end BB Bread’s fairy tale run in the Mozzart Bet Cup. Coach Muyoti says he faced a worthy opponent regardless of tier.
"I’d like to congratulate BB Bread for the display they have given us. They have really played so well, and for a team at that level to play like that, I tip my hat to them," says the coach.
Police had, for the most part of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, failed to replicate last season’s stellar run, which had them win the league, forcing a coaching change midway as Muyoti arrived.
He, however, took a while before finding his winning formula and has now won two in a row in the league, conceding just once. Muyoti expected his charges to carry this form to the cup and was pleased with the result.
"As for my boys, I congratulate them for the seriousness that they have shown in the match because had we dared to underestimate them, we would have suffered. They are a good team and have a bright future," continues the former Nairobi United coach.

There is a reason BB Bread play the way they do, and Muyoti thinks he knows the reason. For a team miles off the top tier to dispatch such huge names as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, clearly, something must be working for the Ajastine Okoba’s side.
"They have very good players, and all you need to do is look at their defence, the centre-backs, they do a very good job, and that’s why they concede a few goals.
Their attack only lacks power, but is equally good. I really like the work their coach has put into the team," Muyoti gives his credit.
He continues by declaring that BB Bread is a team for the future, and should they maintain the same trajectory, they will definitely be something to talk about in the national fold in the near future.
"The team is compact when they defend, and in my analysis before we played them, I noticed that they are doing equally great in their league. When they meet their age mates, they post good results, and it’s a team that has a bright future," concludes Muyoti.
The Premier League title seems a little distant for Muyoti’s men, with 14 points separating them and leaders Gor Mahia with just eight matches remaining.
The Mozzart Bet Cup thus presents the only way their efforts can be rewarded in the form of a trophy and, eventually, another shot at the CAF interclub competitions.
With Gor and Leopards out, the work ahead reduces significantly, but other giants like Tusker, Bandari, Kakamega Homeboyz and defending champions Nairobi United still linger. There’s still work to be done.
