The tournament, initially scheduled to be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, will now take place in Nairobi from Thursday, 4 to Tuesday, 16 September. In a revised arrangement, Tanzania will instead host the CECAFA Club Championship, which is also slated for September.
According to a statement from CECAFA, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) submitted a successful bid to host the regional tournament, which will feature eight teams.
This marks the second time Kenya will stage the qualifiers, having hosted the inaugural edition in 2021, won by Vihiga Queens, who then went on to represent the region in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Kenya will be represented by Kenya Police Bullets FC, who successfully defended their league title in the recently concluded season. The team is looking to secure continental qualification after narrowly losing to Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) FC in last year’s final.
“We are happy that the tournament will be returning to Kenya after the inaugural one was hosted there in 2021,” said CECAFA Competitions Director Yusuf Mossi in an interview with CECAFA Media.
CECAFA also announced an adjustment to the tournament dates to ensure the qualifiers are completed before Thursday, 18 September. This change is aimed at allowing eligible players to participate in the preliminary round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for the same month.
Four member countries, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti, will not be participating in this year’s qualifiers. Only the tournament winner will earn a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Since the competition’s inception four years ago, teams such as Vihiga Queens, Simba Queens, JKT Queens (Tanzania), and CBE FC (Ethiopia) have featured at the continental level.
Defending champions CBE FC and South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars remain the only clubs to have appeared in all four editions of the qualifiers.
The eight teams set to compete in the 2025 CECAFA qualifiers are:
Top Girls Academy FC (Burundi), Kenya Police Bullets FC (Kenya), Yei Joint Stars FC (South Sudan), JKT Queens (Tanzania), Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC (Ethiopia), Kampala Queens (Uganda), Rayon Sports Women FC (Rwanda), JKU Princesses FC (Zanzibar)
