Kenyan teenager Damien Osborne Odera has taken a major step in his budding football career after signing his first professional contract with Swiss top-flight side FC Zürich.

The 18-year-old son of Murang’a Seal head coach and former Harambee Stars midfielder Osborne Monday has been part of Zürich’s youth setup since July 2024.

His steady rise through the ranks has now been rewarded with a long-term deal running until 2030.

“FC Zürich is pleased to announce that Damien Osborne Odera (born July 26, 2007) has signed his first professional contract, valid until 2030,” the club said in an official statement.

The 18-year-old attacking all-rounder, who can play both as a winger and striker, joined the club’s U19 side in the summer of 2024 from German outfit FC Radolfzell, where he came through the ranks.”

The left winger, who holds dual eligibility for Kenya and Germany, has impressed with his versatility and composure, featuring 10 times for Zürich’s U21 team in the Swiss Promotion League.

His performances have also earned him training opportunities with the senior squad, in the club’s belief in his potential.

Odera has now featured in three games for the club this season out of a possible 15 and registered a goal in that run.

Speaking after signing his deal, Odera expressed gratitude and ambition:

I was warmly welcomed at FC Zürich and have already developed a lot here. Despite receiving other offers, I signed a five-year contract because I’m convinced this is the right environment for me. I want to realize my dream here and, in time, step up to the first team.”

Zürich’s U21 side currently sits ninth in the Promotion League standings and will face Brühl on Sunday, November 9.

Depending on team plans, Odera could also be considered for inclusion in the senior team’s Swiss Super League fixture against Luzern on Saturday.

Odera’s progression marks another inspiring chapter for Kenyan footballers abroad, as he looks to build on his father’s legacy while forging his own path in European football.
