His first stint at Sofapaka was between 2016 and 2018

Ugandan international, Mathias Kigonya, is not eager for another relegation dogfight, like it happened in 2016, following his recent return to Sofapaka ahead of the new FKFPL campaign.

In his first stint with the 2009 champions, Sofapaka had to fight tooth and nail to avoid the chop, which they eventually managed to escape on goal difference, finishing just above Ushuru FC and City Stars who got relegated.

Instead of battling relegation this time around, Kigonya is upbeat that they should get the club on the ascendancy once again and has even dared to dream about winning the title.

"The first time I was at the club, we fought relegation, and we were able to survive the chop. This is a fate I do not want to face again. “This coming season we must get the club back to its lost glory and I am optimistic we are going to challenge for title. The club is well composed, comprising of both experienced and young talents, and this is a great way to have a blended team. I have a good feeling that once we get our footing right, we are going to have a great squad to challenge for honors," he said as quoted on the club's website.

The custodian is hoping to bring his vast experience to the fold although he has admitted that there is a lot of competition in the goalkeeping department but he is ready to battle it out with his teammates for a place between the sticks.

"I call Sofapaka home because it gave me the platform to make great moves in my career. I am so delighted and excited to be back at the club and I look forward to a successful second stint with the club. There is a lot of competition since I have found two solid keepers and an upcoming goalie who are both fighting for a starting berth. I will have to battle it out and ensure I bring my experience through to help the club do well with the cleansheets," he added.

Kigonya joined Sofapaka for his first stint in 2016 and went on to spend just over two years with Batoto Ba Mungu, leaving in October 2018 at a time when the club was struggling financially.

After parting ways with Sofapaka, Kigonya joined Kakamega Homeboyz before moving to Zambia, and later joined Azam in 2021.
