According to online photos shared by the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department of Sports, Elijah Mwangi, the facility is still at its initial stages of construction.

As it stands, the foundational pillars that will be used to erect the terraces are almost complete and are now expected to pave the way for the construction of spectator stands, which will be built all around the facility.

The stadium, which upon completion will have a seating capacity of 10,000 people, is expected to transform the sporting economy of Nyandarua County, as explained by PS Mwangi.

“Designed to be a top sporting infrastructure, the facility will feature a standard football pitch, an eight-lane tartan athletics track, a dedicated VIP warm-up track, fully equipped changing rooms, modern spectator terraces, and ample parking.

Upon completion, the stadium will firmly position Nyandarua among Kenya's premier sporting destinations with the capacity to host major national, regional, and international sporting events,” stated Mwangi.

Mwangi went ahead to elucidate the importance of what, upon completion, will be the biggest sporting facility in the Central region county.

“Beyond sports, the magnificent Ol Kalou Stadium will unlock the immense sports tourism potential of the breathtaking Nyandarua County.

It is poised to attract elite sporting competitions, cultural festivals, music concerts, and other high-profile events, further elevating the county's reputation as a vibrant hub of talent, culture, and entertainment,” he stated.

The stadium was initially undertaken by the County Government of Nyandarua, who had begun by constructing the current perimeter wall, gate and the VIP dias, which stands incomplete.

Before the national government took over, the county had spent Ksh157 million towards the construction of the facility, with Ksh30 million of the amount going towards the VIP dias.

With construction beginning in 2015, the national government assumed control of the project after years of stagnation and with the intention to make an even bigger facility at a cost of Ksh800 million.

Even before its completion, the facility is already beneficial as it provides hundreds of jobs for local youths who are involved in its construction, as well as local businesses providing materials.
