Spurs' bloated squad is slowing the club down

Tottenham's chairman, Daniel Levy, faces a challenge in the final week of the transfer window. The club needs to sell several unwanted players, but progress has been slow. They've already sold three players so far: Harry Winks, Joe Rodon, and captain Harry Kane. This has led them to delay new signings until they reduce their squad size, which is too large.

Head coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged the situation, saying they can't keep adding players with such a big squad already. There are around six senior players up for transfer: Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Djed Spence, Sergio Reguilon, and Harvey White. They also want to send young players like Troy Parrott and Alfie Devine on loan to gain experience.

Tottenham's main focus is addressing the squad size before considering new signings. Selling unwanted players like Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Davinson Sanchez will be at the top of Levy's agenda. Some players like Bryan Gil and Ryan Sessegnon might stay as they are recovering from injuries.

The transfer progress has been slow, but it usually gets faster in the last week. Spurs have too many players, so they need to sell some before they can buy new ones - but it's a demanding mission. For example, despite being a good player, Sergio Reguilon didn't play much last season. Selling him is like working magic. Tanguy Ndombele gained a reputation as a lazy player, and Djed Spence has few clubs interested in him.

Veteran goalkeeper and former captain Hugo Lloris is also hard to sell because of his high wages. Other Premier League teams also have problems selling players because of money differences between leagues.

Tottenham's structure without a director of football might be making things harder. Levy handles deals by himself and asks for a lot of money for players. Postecoglou says some players might still be at the club after the transfer deadline. He's willing to work with them if they don't leave. It's a big mess in North London as a consequence of years of mismanagement.
