The former league champions were relegated last season

The 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions Mathare United staged an incredible comeback to beat Kenya Police 4-3 in a pre-season friendly match played at the Police Pavilion grounds on Saturday morning.

The friendly match provided a chance for Mathare coach Leonard Odipo to assess the newly-assembled team heading to the National Super League season.

Mathare’s 25-year long stay in the top flight came to an end last season after finishing second from bottom with Vihiga Bullets occupying the last slot.

Their relegation triggered mass player exodus forcing the management to call for trials in order to constitute a new team.

Mathare, also had to bring in a new technical bench to replace Collins Omondi and some members of his backroom staff who left the club after its relegation.

Coming up against the well-oiled Police who have had part of their pre-season in Rwanda, Mathare were expected to struggle in matching up the law enforcers.

That was evident in the first half as Police were at some point leading 3-0.

However, the Slum Boys proved to have saved the best for last as they leveled matters before netting the match-winning goal.

Police got their goals through: Elvis Rupia, Kenneth Muguna and David Simiyu. Muguna joined Police two months ago after leaving Tanzanian Premier League side Azam.

Mathare scored through; Christian Lubulu, Peter Kinyanjui, Meshack Otieno and Steve Kimari.

Lubulu, will be pleased to have overcame heartbreak and began life at Mathare with a goal against a team that boasts of quality players in all departments.

The midfielder wad released by Sofapaka last week barely two weeks after joining the 2009 league winners.

Mathare beat Police in a similar score line in December last year when the two met in e friendly match
